Bone structure of horses

The horse has suffered some bone changes such as an increase in its size and especially its limbs to reduce the finger tips of a single material surrounded Bone structure of horsesby a hull or vessel called the cornea.  On the front limbs the ulna and radius are fused, resulting in a single bone.  This has also happened with the tibia and fibula which prevents them being able to turn their hands and feet (so called since ancient times because of the similar bone with human beings).

The bones of the horse’s head are long and the face is twice the length of the skull. The mandible is long and has a wide and flat surface on the bottom of the back. Horses have a minimum of 36 teeth.  The spine is composed of 51 vertebrae.

The parts of the horse

The horse’s body is divided into three areas: anterior; body and posterior.

Horses reach sexual maturity at age 4.   Gestation lasts about 11 months, and the female gives birth to a single brood (the birth of twins is rare as the births of 3 or more foals occurs more in older mares).  Domestic horses have difficulty engaging in sex, so sometimes it is necessary to lead the horse when it comes to fertilize the female.
