Galiceno Horse

Galiceno is a breed that originated from Mexico. Galiceno is one of the horse breeds descended from the historic Spanish horse, and they possess the famous extra gait. Galicenon is smooth and quick and is a Galiceno Horsevery popular riding horse in Mexico. Galiceno counted as a prime example of the Spanish influence on all of today’s American horse breeds.

The breed’s ancestors originated from Asturcon. These horses were famous for their smooth ride and additional gaits that were once very popular in England in the 1500s. These horses were taken to Mexico by Hernan Cortez and the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s. Galiceno has become increasingly common since the 1950s and was approved as a breed in 1958 when it first was introduced to the United States. 1959 saw the launch of the first rasforeningen to protect the breed. Galiceno is still pretty unusual outside of Mexico.

Attributes

The height at the withers rarely goes over 148cm making it count as a pony, but the breed has the characteristics and nature and also looks like a big horse and is therefore called the miniature horse for the most part. Galiceno are docile, strong and intelligent. Galicenos speed and agility have made it popular in Western riding and it is used today as much as for transportation in Mexico.

Galiceno has a noble appearance with a nice, proportionate head, moveable ears and expressive eyes. The horses have no typical pony characteristics but they are athletic, with slender body with a muscular, rather short neck.

Galiceno has strong legs and small but quite hard hooves. However they sometimes suffer from bad posture. The horses are popular in Mexico where they are willing to work, easy to learn and are intelligent. They are easy to train and have good stamina. Although they are relatively small, they can easily carry a grown man for several hours, even during the hottest days.

Garrano

The Garrano pony’s brought to America were the ones who later became the Mexican breed Galiceno. Nowadays there is no race in Mexico called Garrano but there are Galiceno sometimes called Garrano. Garranohastar, are in Portugal in the Minho region.

The horses are also sometimes called Minho. These are descendants of the original Garranoponnyerna brought to America but because of constant travel with Arab thoroughbreds so the modern Garrano has not as many similarities to the old Garranon.
