Maremma Horse

The Maremma is a horse native to the Maremma, a wide area that extends near the Tyrrhenian coast between southern Tuscany and Maremma infonorthern Lazio. Its origin goes back to when the Celts took over the Alps and their horses met Eastern and African horses who were already living on the Italian territory. When cross bred, these horses would produce Maremmano.

Nearly two thousand years later during the Renaissance, Lorenzo de ‘Medici in Tuscany introduced its junction with the Arab and the race was divided into two types: the Tuscan and Lazio who had been more like the initial type. In the following centuries, breeding in the wild produced a horse that has not only a fiery character, and is energetic and generous, but is also very strong from a physical point of view. Without denying its rustic origins, lately the Maremma is used with good results in sports. They compete on par with the other Italian horses.

How to recognize the breed: the ears are medium length; straight and alert; bright eyes; long head and quite heavy limbs with a solid good perpendicularity; feet well shaped and well proportioned and they have very strong fingernails. The coat can be bay or dark bay, as well as black. Rarely they are burnt chestnut and gray. The height can vary from 1.60m to 1.70m.

Even today the Maremma is born and lives in the wild and is incredibly resistant to hunger, thirst and bad weather.
